Education & Meetings

SHEA is considered by educators, employers, and leaders in the field to be the gold standard for training in healthcare epidemiology and advancing the practice of infection prevention worldwide. The Society advances professional learning through its annual meeting, workshops, courses, symposia, and website-based learning.

In 2012, SHEA has several key educational options for people seeking the latest research, skill-building, and networking opportunities in infection prevention and healthcare epidemiology:

  • SHEA Spring 2012 Conference: Advancing Healthcare Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Stewardship
    April 13-16, 2012  •  Jacksonville, Florida

This exciting new training conference offers three important educational tracks: Basic Healthcare Epidemiology (SHEA/CDC training course), Advanced Epidemiology Methods (new!), and a leadership forum on Antimicrobial Stewardship (new!).  Essential for the professional new to the field or in need of advanced skill-building.

  • 16th SHEA Annual Fellows Course: Healthcare Epidemiology and Infection Control (coming soon!)
    July 5-7, 2012  •   Baltimore, Maryland

In partnership with six medical institutions, SHEA offers an intensive three-day introduction to healthcare epidemiology and infection prevention.  This course is important for any fellow or healthcare professional interested in specializing in the field.
  • IDWeek: Advancing Science, Improving Care
    October 17-22, 2012   •  San Diego, California

In partnership with IDSA, PIDS, and HIVMA, SHEA has created this joint Annual Scientific Meeting to provide the latest science and research across the treatment spectrum.
  • SHEA Epi-Online
For the healthcare professional in need of high-quality educational courses, but is not able to travel to other in person courses, both the Antimicrobial Stewardship in Practice and the Fundamentals of Healthcare Epidemiology course allow participants to take the course overtime and gain essential skills and information to improve their practice.

SHEA Spring 2012 Conference

Preliminary ProgramThe newly designed 2012 spring training conference is a hybrid of the traditional SHEA/CDC Training Course in Healthcare Epidemiology – our longstanding ‘basic training’ course – coupled with a new and stimulating ‘advanced epidemiologic methods’ track that will be valuable to professionals across the lifespan of a healthcare epidemiology career.

The advanced methods track addresses the complexities of observational study design, survey design and analysis, health economic outcomes, multistate models for outcome studies, risk factor analysis and much more. The conference closes with a prominent leadership meeting addressing the increasingly challenging issues in antimicrobial stewardship and demonstrating various approaches to research within the field. Preliminary Program
