Comments from Fall 2007 attendees:

  • I am impressed with the quality of presenters - true experts in their fields.
  • Of the dozens of educational meetings I've attended, this was the best! I'm seriously considering requiring it for my IC staff next year.
  • This was one of the best courses I've attended in many years!
  • The SHEA/CDC Course in Healthcare Epidemiology provides training for infectious diseases fellows, healthcare epidemiologists, and others interested in training and application of epidemiologic principles.

It emphasizes hands-on exercises, practical materials, and case studies supplemented with lectures and seminars covering fundamental aspects of hospital epidemiology, including:

    • epidemiology and surveillance
    • epidemic/cluster investigation
    • transmission and control of nosocomial infections
    • disinfection and sterilization
    • employee health
    • isolation systems
    • regulatory compliance
    • quality improvement

    Jonathan Freeman Scholarship
The Jonathan Freeman Scholarship was established by SHEA to promote the training of outstanding infectious disease fellows who demonstrate interest in the field of healthcare epidemiology. The society established the scholarship in the memory of Jonathan Freeman, MD, MPH, a teacher and researcher in field of healthcare epidemiology dedicated to improving the delivery of healthcare through the prevention of nosocomial infections.  Dr. Freeman was a founding faculty member who for a decade taught the epidemiology and statistics track of the course. Up to five Jonathan Freeman Scholarships in the amount of $500 each will be awarded to infectious disease fellows at every course to defray the expenses of attending the program. In addition to the $500 amount, each scholarship winner will receive a complimentary registration.

    To apply, please submit:
    • CV
    • A letter of no more than one page describing why you would like to have additional training in healthcare epidemiology
    • A letter from your program director outlining your qualifications

The deadline for scholarship applications for the course is March 25, 2008.

    Gina Pugliese Scholarship
The Gina Pugliese Scholarship was established by SHEA to promote the training of a non-physician infection control professional (ICP) with a minimum of two years experience, who has shown outstanding interest and leadership in the field. SHEA established this scholarship in honor of Gina Pugliese, RN, MS, a prominent infection control professional and leader in the field of healthcare epidemiology. Ms. Pugliese was a founding faculty member of the SHEA/CDC Training Course and cochair for fifteen years. Each scholarship recipient will receive $500 grant to defray the expenses of attending the program and complimentary registration to the course.

    To apply, please submit:
    • CV
    • A letter of no more than one page describing why you would like to have additional training in healthcare epidemiology
    • A letter from your supervisor or a professional colleague in the field, outlining your qualifications and leadership skills

The deadline for scholarship applications for the course is March 25, 2008.
