The SHEA/CDC Course in Healthcare Epidemiology provides training for infectious diseases fellows, healthcare epidemiologists, infection preventionists, quality improvment staff, public health officials, and others interested in training and application of epidemiologic principles.

The course, in existence for more than 10 years, emphasizes hands-on exercises, practical materials, and case studies supplemented with lectures and seminars covering fundamental aspects of healthcare epidemiology, including:

  • epidemiology and surveillance
  • epidemic/cluster investigation
  • transmission and control of nosocomial infections
  • disinfection and sterilization
  • employee health
  • isolation systems
    regulatory compliance
  • quality improvement
  • patient safety

    Scholarships

    Jonathan Freeman Scholarship

    The Jonathan Freeman Scholarship was established by SHEA to promote the training of outstanding infectious disease fellows who demonstrate interest in the field of healthcare epidemiology. The society established the scholarship in the memory of Jonathan Freeman, MD, MPH, a teacher and researcher in field of healthcare epidemiology dedicated to improving the delivery of healthcare through the prevention of nosocomial infections.  Dr. Freeman was a founding faculty member who for a decade taught the epidemiology and statistics track of the course. Up to five Jonathan Freeman Scholarships in the amount of $500 each will be awarded to infectious disease fellows at every course to defray the expenses of attending the program. In addition to the $500 amount, each scholarship winner will receive a complimentary registration.

    • A letter from your program director outlining your qualifications

    Gina Pugliese Scholarship

    The Gina Pugliese Scholarship was established by SHEA to promote the training of a non-physician infection preventionist (IP) with a minimum of two years experience, who has shown outstanding interest and leadership in the field. SHEA established this scholarship in honor of Gina Pugliese, RN, MS, a prominent IP and leader in the field of healthcare epidemiology. Ms. Pugliese was a founding faculty member of the SHEA/CDC Training Course and cochair for fifteen years. Each scholarship recipient will receive $500 grant to defray the expenses of attending the program and complimentary registration to the course.

    • A letter of no more than one page describing why you would like to have additional training in healthcare epidemiology
    • A letter from your supervisor or a colleague in the field, outlining your qualifications and leadership skills

    Submission of applications does not constitute enrollment in the course.

    CME

    The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. SHEA designates this educational activity for a maximum of 22.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.


    SHEA/CDC Fundamentals of Healthcare Epidemiology Course

    California enacted statutory requirements mandating that all physicians with responsibility for infection control in their hospitals receive specialized training in infection surveillance, prevention and control by January 1, 2010.

    To meet this need, SHEA and CDC adapted their Training Course in Healthcare Epidemiology to a one-day curriculum. Participants will receive 8.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ and a certificate that fulfills the statutory requirement for credentialing purposes.
