The SHEA/CDC Course in Healthcare Epidemiology provides training for infectious diseases fellows, healthcare epidemiologists, and others interested in training and application of epidemiologic principles.
It emphasizes hands-on exercises, practical materials, and case studies supplemented with lectures and seminars covering fundamental aspects of hospital epidemiology, including:
- epidemiology and surveillance
- epidemic/cluster investigation
- transmission and control of nosocomial infections
- disinfection and sterilization
- employee health
- isolation systems
- regulatory compliance
- quality improvement

Fellows (with proof of training status) - $450
Jonathan Freeman Scholarship
The Jonathan Freeman Scholarship was established by SHEA to promote the training of outstanding infectious disease fellows who demonstrate interest in the field of healthcare epidemiology. The society established the scholarship in the memory of Jonathan Freeman, MD, MPH, a teacher and researcher in field of healthcare epidemiology dedicated to improving the delivery of healthcare through the prevention of nosocomial infections. Dr. Freeman was a founding faculty member who for a decade taught the epidemiology and statistics track of the course. Up to five Jonathan Freeman Scholarships in the amount of $500 each will be awarded to infectious disease fellows at every course to defray the expenses of attending the program. In addition to the $500 amount, each scholarship winner will receive a complimentary registration.

• A letter of no more than one page describing why you would like to have additional training in healthcare epidemiology
• A letter from your program director outlining your qualifications
The deadline for scholarship applications for the course is March 25, 2008.
Gina Pugliese Scholarship
The Gina Pugliese Scholarship was established by SHEA to promote the training of a non-physician infection control professional (ICP) with a minimum of two years experience, who has shown outstanding interest and leadership in the field. SHEA established this scholarship in honor of Gina Pugliese, RN, MS, a prominent infection control professional and leader in the field of healthcare epidemiology. Ms. Pugliese was a founding faculty member of the SHEA/CDC Training Course and cochair for fifteen years. Each scholarship recipient will receive $500 grant to defray the expenses of attending the program and complimentary registration to the course.

• A letter of no more than one page describing why you would like to have additional training in healthcare epidemiology
• A letter from your supervisor or a professional colleague in the field, outlining your qualifications and leadership skills
The deadline for scholarship applications for the course is March 25, 2008.
Submission of applications does not constitute enrollment in the course.
CME and Contact Hours
SHEA is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. SHEA designates this CME activity for a approximately 16.25 credits of Category 1 credit toward the American Medical Association’s Physician Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in this educational activity.
This continuing education activity was approved by the Virginia Nurses Association Continuing Education Committee, an accredited approver of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation, for 16.25 contact hours.
