SHEA, in collaboration with anesthesia societies, released today an expert guidance with recommendations to improve infection prevention in operating room anesthesia services.

The guidance, published in Infection Control & Healthcare Epidemiology, makes recommendations in the areas of hand hygiene, environmental disinfection, and continuous improvement. The full text is available, without a login at https://doi.org/10.1017/ice.2018.303.

As part of the guidance roll out, SHEA will be hosting a webinar series. The first webinar, "New Guidance for Operating Room Anesthesia – Recommendations for Preventing Infections," will be held on Dec 18, 2018 12 p.m. EST.

The authors of the guidance will discuss ways hospitals and healthcare providers can reduce infections associated with anesthesiology and review the guidance’s purpose, development, and recommendations for improving infection prevention. Two follow-up webinars will answer questions from the audience, and discuss ways to implement the recommendations.

The guidance was endorsed by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), the American Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants (AAAA), the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF), and the Association for periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), with a letter of support from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).
