The APIC-SHEA Award for Lifetime Contribution to the Field of Infection Prevention and Epidemiology is presented annually to an individual who has made great strides in the fields of infection prevention and epidemiology throughout their career.  Although the individual’s primary job is neither as an Infection Preventionist or Healthcare Epidemiologist, they have made significant contributions to both organizations over their lifetime.

Criteria

  1. Broad recognition for impact on infection prevention (IP) and healthcare epidemiology (HE).
  2. Advances the IP and HE professions through varied efforts, including presentations, publications, and research.
  3. Mentors others to promote the viability and credibility of IP and HE.
  4. Collaborates across industries as evidence of nominee’s interdisciplinary achievements.
  5. Demonstrates forward-thinking leadership through new ways of thinking or new applications of existing knowledge.
  6. Nominee must be a recognized expert and show evidence of significant contributions to infection prevention, healthcare epidemiology, or antibiotic stewardship, and have created, delivered, promoted, or influenced infection prevention, healthcare epidemiology, or antibiotic stewardship practice, or influenced public perception, attitudes, and awareness.

The award is presented no more than annually and may not be presented every year.

Eligibility

  1. Primary job is neither an Infection Preventionist or Healthcare Epidemiologist.
  2. Current or former member of SHEA or APIC is preferred.
  3. Individuals cannot self-nominate.
  4. Qualifying individuals are eligible to receive the award once in a lifetime.
  5. Members of SHEA’s Board of Trustees or APIC’s Board of Directors are not eligible for nomination during their term of service.
  6. Members of SHEA’s Board of Trustees or APIC’s Board of Directors can submit a nomination or provide a reference letter for a nominee.
  7. Members of SHEA’s or APIC’s Award committees are not eligible for nomination during their term of service.

Presentation and Award

The APIC-SHEA Lifetime Contribution Award is presented during the Opening Plenary of both SHEA’s Annual Conference (March/April) and APIC’s Annual Conference (June). There will be a photo opportunity and award presentation at both events. 

The recipient receives a commemorative plaque, $1,000 award check, complimentary registration, and a travel stipend (up to $1,500) to each organization’s annual conference.  Recipient will also present their “sentinel work” at SHEA’s annual conference and APIC’s annual conference as part of the APIC-SHEA joint session at each event.

Submission

  1. Online application (SHEA members will need to create a login for APIC's online application site)
  2. Nomination Letter
    • Overview of how candidate meets award criteria.
    • Nominator must be a current member of APIC or SHEA and cannot represent the same organization as the reference letter (unless a member of both organizations).
  3. Reference Letter
    • Examples of the nominee’s contributions to IP and HE.
    • Examples of work completed within the last 15 years, including presentations, publications, and research.
    • The nomination letter and reference letters must be submitted by different people.
    • Reference must be a current member of APIC or SHEA and cannot represent the same organization as the nomination letter (unless a member of both organizations).
  4. Nominee’s current CV
